The Shadow Knows: Protecting Public Health And Regaining Trust

Hostility toward science is not a recent phenomenon. In 1948, the Soviet Union officially denied the existence of genes, eliminating plant science in favor of “training” plants to be more productive. The resultant crop failures led to millions of deaths in both the USSR and China, whose communist party also adopted this pseudoscience.

Even when not official governmental policy, pseudoscience is rarely, if ever, helpful and is often much more beneficial to the practitioner than the patient. In the early 1900s, John Brinkley made a fortune promoting the implantation of goat testicles as a cure for impotence and a host of other ills.

Other charlatans became wealthy from products with purported health benefits including an elixir reportedly derived from rattlesnakes. This “Snake Oil” was 99% mineral oil and 1 percent beef fat, with traces of red pepper and turpentine thrown in the mix to give it a more medicinal smell.

More recently, Mehmet Oz, the current administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), paid $5.25 million to settle false advertising claims from his promotion of dietary supplements for weight loss.

Quack Medicine: Cautionary Tales

Time and again, pseudoscience has infiltrated public discourse, often with catastrophic consequences.

The Anti-Vaccine Movement and Andrew Wakefield

In 1998, British physician Andrew Wakefield published a fraudulent study in The Lancet suggesting a link between the MMR vaccine and autism. Though later completely debunked and retracted, the damage was done. Vaccine rates plummeted, and measles outbreaks surged.

The key failure? Lack of immediate and authoritative opposition. It took years for mainstream science to reclaim the narrative.

Radiation “Cures” in the Early 20th Century

In the early 1900s, products like Radithor—radioactive water marketed as a health tonic—were widely sold in the U.S. Its most-famous victim, industrialist Eben Byers, died a gruesome death from radiation poisoning. Despite growing evidence of harm, regulatory agencies failed to act promptly.

This era of quack science only ended when independent medical voices and journalists raised public alarms, eventually prompting federal intervention.

COVID-19 Misinformation and the Hydroxychloroquine

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the promotion of unproven treatments like hydroxychloroquine—often politically motivated—led to widespread confusion. Mixed messages from within government bodies undermined faith in public health institutions.

What was missing? A clear, respected, and independent expert voice that could quickly refute misinformation and reinforce evidence-based medicine.

Protecting public health is a fundamental governmental responsibility. The conditions that previously encouraged a belief in quack medicine—specifically insufficient numbers of adequately trained physicians and a lack of empiric, evidence-based science—no longer exist. Yet there persists a willingness to accept as valid such foolishness as injecting bleach to treat a life-threatening viral illness. An administration that sides with such pseudoscience is no better than the 1948 Soviet communist party.

An especially dangerous move is the recent firing by Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) whose role is to advise the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on what vaccines people in the United States should take and when.

This group of well-respected, nonpartisan experts were replaced with much less qualified individuals, including many who have clearly expressed anti-vaccine sentiments with little actual experience with vaccine science. Despite widespread criticism that this move, “will further fuel the spread of vaccine-preventable illnesses,” the current political climate makes it unrealistic to expect any congressional intervention.

Protecting public health during this unprecedented attack on reason, science, and medical ethics, requires a “shadow” ACIP committee to serve as a counterbalance. Similar to the “Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet” found in parliamentary democracies like the UK, this committee would develop and promote alternative policies while holding the government to account for its actions. Its members would be vaccine experts with extensive experience and deep institutional knowledge with a record of evidence-based decision-making, such as the 17 recently fired ACIP members.

With an infrastructure funded by wealthy individuals with an interest in public health (hello Bill Gates and Mark Cuban) or other sources not connected to vaccine manufacturers, this committee would:

  • Be a repository of vaccine information
  • Review all public reports issued by CDC and other governmental agencies
  • Independently analyze vaccine-related scientific data
  • Host regular public briefings and publish transparent findings
  • Provide alternative vaccine-related recommendations when appropriate
  • Rapidly respond on media and digital platforms to false statements and illegitimate, unsubstantiated claims about vaccinations
  • Be a resource for current legal challenges and future injury claims

Such a shadow committee is necessary to ensure that the current administration’s vaccine decisions are scientifically justified. As an independent communications channel, this shadow ACIP committee would provide clear explanations of vaccine science and policy without government messaging filters to enhance public understanding and combat misinformation. Being accountable only to the public good, free from political influence and transparent in their deliberations, this shadow ACIP committee will foster public trust. And in an era of growing vaccine hesitancy, such trust and accountability are critical.
