Amazon Expands Renewable Energy, Cloud Partnership with Iberdrola to Spain, Portugal

Amazon and global energy and electricity provider Iberdrola announced today an expanded partnership, with Amazon agreeing to purchase 476 MW of solar and wind energy in Spain and Portugal to help match the electricity used in its operations with renewable energy.

The new power purchase agreements (PPAs) follow the recent announcement by Amazon that it was the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally in 2024, marking the company’s fifth consecutive year in that position. Last year, Amazon also revealed that it had reached its goal to power its global operations with 100% renewable energy, 7 years ahead of its initial target. Amazon first announced its clean energy goal in 2019, pledging to match all of the electricity consumed across its global operations, including data centers, corporate buildings, stores and fulfillment centers, with 100% renewable energy by 2030. At the time, the company was at 42% renewable energy. Amazon’s clean energy initiatives for part of the company’s Climate Pledge commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040.

Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, said:

“Amazon is committed to driving the carbon-free energy transition forward, both to advance our Climate Pledge goals, and support Europe’s transition to more sustainable energy sources.”

The new announcement marks an extension of a strategic partnership for renewable energy PPAs and cloud services launched by Amazon and Iberdrola in 2022, expanding the renewable energy purchases under the partnership to five countries. Current countries included in the renewable energy partnership include the U.S., UK, and Germany.

Under the extended agreement, Amazon will purchase 219 MW of renewable energy from the Tâmega Wind Complex in Portugal – Amazon’s first PPA in the country. With construction scheduled to begin in early 2025, Tâmega is anticipated to be the largest wind farm in Portugal, producing power equivalent to the consumption of 128,000 households per year, with Iberdrola investing around €350 million in the project.

Amazon will also purchase 257 MW of solar and wind energy from two projects in Spain, including the Ciudad Rodrigo solar PV plant in Salamanca and the Valdemoro wind farm located in the province of Burgos.

In addition to the PPAs, the partnership also includes services provided to Iberdrola by Amazon’s AWS cloud business. Iberdrola selected AWS in 2024 as its preferred cloud provider for generative AI workloads. Iberdrola said that it is using AWS’ AI capabilities to improve the grid connection process for new points of supply for its distribution business, and utilizing the compute power of AWS to optimize its windfarm design, and to improve weather forecasting simulations across its windfarms globally, with plans in 2025 to build a Virtual Desktop as a Service platform on AWS.

Aitor Moso Raigoso, Executive Vice President Customer Business at Iberdrola, said:

“With Amazon we have a partnership that truly matches our own commitment to develop sustainable energy and drive the energy transition forward around the world. With Iberdrola’s extensive global portfolio of renewables, we are continually seeking to expand such partnerships, to accelerate decarbonisation and support businesses in reaching their climate goals.”
