About the Disability Confident scheme
The Disability Confident scheme helps employers make the most of the skills and strengths that disabled people bring to the workplace.
Being a Disability Confident Employer reflects our public commitment to supporting existing employees who may have a disability, while also ensuring our recruitment processes are accessible and inclusive. We share good practice with other employers and continually consider how disability confidence can be embedded into our processes and procedures.
The scheme has 3 levels designed to support employers on their Disability Confident journey:
- Disability Confident Committed (level 1)
- Disability Confident Employer (level 2)
- Disability Confident Leader (level 3)
All employers join the scheme at level 1 (Disability Confident Committed), and progress through the levels as their confidence increases.
Why becoming Disability Confident matters
Joining the Disability Confident scheme can help employers attract, support and keep talented people who make a real difference to the business. It is relevant both when recruiting new employees and when supporting existing team members who may develop a disability during their working lives. A Disability Confident approach helps people perform at their best, contribute fully and feel valued as part of the organisation.
For employers, the scheme can strengthen recruitment and retention by widening access to capable candidates, improving the quality of hires and creating a fairer working environment. It can also help businesses hold on to important knowledge and experience, strengthen employee morale, and encourage greater loyalty and commitment across the workforce. Inclusive practices often support lower staff turnover and can reduce some of the disruption and cost associated with repeated recruitment and training.
The scheme also gives customers, suppliers and other organisations a clear signal that the business is committed to equality, fairness and inclusion in the workplace. Employers that take part are helping to shape more positive attitudes towards disability, while influencing workplace culture, behaviour and decision-making within their own operations, networks and communities.
Disability Confident organisations may benefit by:
- reaching a broader and more diverse talent base
• attracting skilled, committed and dependable employees
• improving staff engagement by showing that all employees are treated fairly
• retaining valuable expertise and experience within the business
• reducing avoidable recruitment and onboarding costs over time
• strengthening their reputation as an inclusive and responsible employer
The scheme is voluntary, and the guidance, resources and examples of good practice available through it can be accessed free of charge.
