STMicroelectronics Signs 15-Year, 1.5 TWh Renewable Energy Purchase Deal with TotalEnergies

Semiconductor company STMicroelectronics announced that it has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to buy renewable energy from French multinational TotalEnergies for manufacturing sites in France. The deal will see TotalEnergies provide STMicroelectronics with 1.5 terrawatts of power over the next 15 years.

The renewable energy will be sourced from two recently completed wind and solar farms, operated by TotalEnergies.

According to the companies, the deal marks the first 15-year PPA in France to include structuration services that will ensure a constant baseload of green electricity amid intermittent production of renewable energy.

TotalEnergies has set targets to expand its renewable energy generation business to 35 GW in 2025, and to more than 100 TWh of net electricity production by 2030. The company’s gross renewable electricity generation installed capacity has reached more than 24 GW as of the end of 2024.

Sophie Chevalier, Senior Vice President Flexible Power & Integration at TotalEnergies, said:

“We are delighted to sign this agreement with STMicroelectronics, which demonstrates our ability to provide long-term and innovative clean firm power solutions tailored to our customers’ needs. TotalEnergies aims to be a preferred partner to support tech industry players towards their decarbonization efforts, and this agreement showcases our commitment and capabilities.”

Geneva-based STMicroelectronics is an integrated device manufacturer, making microchips that are embedded in a wide variety of products from electric cars to factories to toothbrushes. The company said that the new agreement marks an important step towards its goals of becoming carbon neutral in its operations and sourcing 100% renewable energy by 2027.

Geoff West, EVP and Chief Procurement Officer at STMicroelectronics, said:

“Starting in 2025, this PPA with TotalEnergies will provide a significant level of renewable energy for ST’s operations in France, which includes R&D, design, sales and marketing and large-volume chip manufacturing.”
